Dothan First Church of the Nazarene is a church made up of people who believe that following Jesus is an adventure to be lived together. We offer not only a building to gather and worship in, but a place to build loving and lasting relationships through Jesus Christ. The Scripture tells us that the Church is the Body of Christ and we believe that we really do need each other on this journey.

We are a Christ-centered community, committed to loving God, connecting in community, and serving the world around us. Jesus meant it when he said: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength...Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-13)

As a church, we believe that loving others can be as simple as being good neighbors. Spending time with parents in our local community revealed a need for low-cost, after school and summer child care. At the start of 2017, we began to prayerfully lay the ground work for a high-quality program that would minister to that need while supporting neighboring families and discipling children to love God and others. Our mission is a simple one: Give the next generation a picture of what God is like - of what it means to be deeply loved - so that they might love others well, too.

So, the Dothan First After School (DFAS) program opened on August 9, 2017, and serves children in kindergarten through 8th grade. Our program encompasses a broad range of focus areas including academic support, arts, sports and recreation, mentoring, and spiritual development. The activities in which children engage while outside of school are critical to their development, highlighting the need for quality, low-cost afterschool programming in our area. Although there are other local after school programs available, many are full to capacity or are cost prohibitive for lower income families or those with multiple children.

High quality afterschool programs generate positive outcomes for students including improved academic performance, classroom behavior, and health. Communities, parents, and businesses also benefit when children have safe and productive ways to spend their time while their parents are at work.

Dothan First Church of the Nazarene recognizes that the story of Jesus didn’t start with us, and it won't end with us. The kingdom of God is big and dynamic. Jesus is always making room. Dothan First After School is a new way forward - meant to honor the stories of our community and help with the hard places in the lives of our neighbors.

There is something powerful about turning to the next generation and teaching them, showing them - what we know and love about Jesus so that we can move forward in strength together. We invite you and your family to join us on this adventure as we learn from Jesus what it means to be people of faith, hope, and love.
